Overview

Ortigia is the island where Syracuse was born almost three thousand years ago. With a licensed local guide you will cross the Umbertino bridge, stand before the Temple of Apollo and enter Piazza Duomo, where a Doric temple still lives inside the Cathedral.

We continue through the old Jewish quarter to the Fountain of Arethusa, a freshwater spring with wild papyrus a few steps from the sea, and end on the seafront with a view of the harbour.

Why go?

In less than one square kilometre Ortigia packs Greek temples, baroque palaces, a freshwater spring by the sea and a lively market. A local guide turns every corner into a story.

  • Stand before the Temple of Apollo, the oldest Doric temple in Sicily
  • Discover a Greek temple hidden inside the Cathedral
  • See wild papyrus growing at the Fountain of Arethusa
  • Walk the narrow lanes of the old Jewish quarter
  • End with a view of the Great Harbour
