Overview
Ortigia is the historic centre of Syracuse, an island linked to the mainland by two bridges. In a few hundred metres you pass from Greek temples to baroque palaces, from the morning market to small beaches carved into the rocks.
The best time to explore is early in the morning or at sunset, when the stone glows and the seafront fills with people.
Tips for your visit
- Visit the market in the morning (closed on Sundays)
- Walk the seafront at sunset
- Swim from the solarium platforms in summer
